John Mulherin, President of the Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn Foundation, gave us a short history lesson about our foundation.

Fred L. Biester: Father of Glenbard

His influence was first felt in the fall of 1918 as the principal of Glenbard High School.  He later became the superintendent of Glenbard High School District 87.  Mr. Biester passed away on March 20, 1962, just months away from his retirement. His remarkable career touched parts of six decades. Rotarian, Fred Biester was Club President in 1944/45. The clubs second president.

Fred donated scholarships, personally and anonymously,  for dozens of students during his tenure.

For over sixty years, the Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn has provided educational and vocational scholarships in varying amounts to students at Glenbard West and Glenbard South. Much of the original seed money came from former G.W. principal Fred L. Biester’s own pockets. Hence the name “Fred L. Biester Memorial Scholarship Fund”.
